About Us
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
“A lawyer’s time and advice are his stock in trade.”
~ Abraham Lincoln
We greatly admire Lincoln and his wisdom as an attorney and later as one of the greatest presidents in American history. As partners, we come from different backgrounds and experiences, but we have found that throughout law school and then as neighboring solo practitioners, that our discussions about cases, strategy and life produced incredible results for us both. As we observed each other’s approach to the type of attorney and person we wanted to be, the realization set in on both of us that we would provide better service to our clients by memorializing what had already begun, our partnership.
Warren Smith is the son of a builder and grew up roofing and framing houses in the blazing heat of South Mississippi; not because it was demanded of him, but rather, that is just what he saw his father doing. He did not realize it then, but a strong work ethic, keeping your word and understanding business were core traits that his father lives out and were, in turn, passed down to him. Attacking problems head-on, straight forward communications and wasting no time are hallmarks of his approach. Problems are often broken down quickly, simplified into the most efficient solution and executed.
Joseph Murphy’s mother was an attorney, and his father was a petroleum engineer. He jokes that he could not decide who to follow, so he got an undergraduate degree in civil engineering and then went to law school. He grew up working outdoors as well, starting out as a “go-for” helper on a pipeline crew at age 12, where he continued to work through high school during the summers. Much like Warren, growing up working in the heat helped him understand how hard it is to earn a dollar. Working with hardened men every day who did not tolerate excuses, lying, or being unreliable, reinforced the lessons his father and mother taught him at home. Combining this experience with an early exposure to “thinking like a lawyer” by his mother gives Joseph a different approach. Rather than trying to “think outside the box”, Joseph just threw the entire box away.
Together, as we talk through cases and strategies, our approaches combined, produce a well-thought out, often unique, but efficient answer. We are aware of each other’s strengths and tend to tilt to the more appropriate partner, depending on what the client needs, or the problems presented.
